DOVETALES CD

RAINBOW IN THE RAIN

We met one autumn afternoon
Inside our college lecture room
When I sat by your side that day
And when it came to take a break
I wondered whether I should make
My way to where your table lay

Chorus:
Calling out your name
My rainbow in the rain
Wonderin' when we'll be together again

And so I shared a cup with you
While we exchanged our thoughts and views
And somehow felt the way you do
When you sense somewhere deep inside
A feeling just can't be denied
And you know where it's leading to

Chorus

When I went back to your place that very first night
We talked of the loves we'd known and things we'd been through
And we were still awake by the morning's first light
I guess it was then I knew I'd fallen for you

As I look back on all we've known
I think of how the years have flown
And through it all the love you've shown
But now my work has taken me
So far from where I want to be
And I can't wait until I'm home

Chorus

KISS IT BETTER…OR KISS IT GOODBYE

When we look from a distance
We don't see things so clear
And where could have stood a good friend
We see someone we fear

They're seen as different from us
No friend, more like a foe
And soon they become the scapegoat
For each and every woe

Chorus:
Seems to me we're much the same
And no one side is all to blame
So why don't we try again?
Kiss it better or kiss it goodbye
Kiss it better or kiss it goodbye

Why can't we see the people
That we view from afar
Are in their way a counterpart
To whatever we are?

Chorus

Every act of forgiveness
May seem like giving in
But to reconcile a difference
Is to let wisdom win

Chorus

KINCORA

We look down upon the dale
From our front window
See the castle up above
Our back hedgerow

Chorus:
And I will always treasure
What we have here together
I'll cherish this forever
Whatever comes our way

We walk out of the door
And up to High Tor
See the cable cars that go
To Masson once more

Chorus

We step inside a cave
Cut in the limestone
Then back to the bungalow
Where we've made our home

Chorus

Kincora would be cold
When those north winds blow
Without you here to hold
And feel our love flow

Chorus

NEW LIFE

Chorus:
New life, everywhere I see new life
With each death a rebirth,
A heaven on Earth
A new life

There'll only ever be
One of you for eternity
But you are a part of all that has gone before
And all to come forevermore

Chorus

We'll only ever see
A brief glimpse of this mystery
But while we're here we may learn from those long since gone
And to those still to come, pass something on

Chorus

No one can ever know
What for us fate may have in store
But what we make of whatever may come our way
Gives meaning to this mortal clay

Chorus

WITHOUT A WORD

Without a word, without a sound
I looked around and she was nowhere to be found
Without the note she never wrote
No reason why, no last goodbye

Chorus:
Why did she go without letting me know?
Just packed her bags and walked out the door
What made her feel she could no longer stay?
Just left her keys and went on her way

Without a trace upon her face
That final time to say she'd no longer be mine
Without a sign, it seemed just fine
No way to tell this was farewell

Chorus

DON'T LOOK BACK

Chorus:
Don't look back, just put it down to fate
Don't look back, for now it's far too late
Tomorrow is a brand new day
So come on, get up and on your way
And don't look back

Sometimes you think you've made a good start
Then somehow it all seems to fall apart
Just when you think this is the one
You end up wondering just where it's gone.

But… Chorus

I was down and out and feeling low
Thinking about the way things go
First they say yes, then they say no
You end up wondering, "Why is it so?"

But… Chorus

Somebody told me just the other day
"Why don't you listen, listen to the words I say?"
And they said, "Time will prove me right"
They said, "In time you'll see the light"

Well I listened and those words seemed to make some sense
But it's not easy when you're sitting on the fence
One side says this, one side says that
You end up wondering just where it's at

But… Chorus

MAKING WAVES

You always seemed so out of reach
Till the day we went down to the beach
We looked out over the open sea
No one around, just you and me

And while the waves gently caressed the sand
You looked at me and took hold of my hand

Tracing the lines as my palm you read
I can't remember much of what you said
But your finger softly stroking my hand
Was all I needed to understand

And as the Sun shone down on that summer day
The moon swelled the tide and the sea filled the bay

CATCH A RIDE

While I'm here, waiting on the outside
Don't steer clear, come and let me in
Here am I, looking for your signal
Don't fly by, take me for a spin

Chorus:
Can I catch a ride?
Let me come inside
It would be so good
If you only would

While I'm here, standing by the roadside
Don't steer clear, open up your door
Here am I, watching you approach me
Don't fly by, stop and say hello

Chorus

While I'm here, hoping for a good sign
Don't steer clear, turn and look my way
Here am I, thinking maybe this time
Don't fly by, come and make my day

Chorus

LOST IN YOUR LOVE

Chorus:
To be lost in your love
Brings such joy to me
Takes away my sorrow
And sets my spirit free

I don't know how it happened
Was it destiny
That we would share together
This sweet mystery?

Chorus

This bliss that I am feeling
Cannot be denied
You make each moment special
When I'm by your side

Chorus

Though we may do things we don't mean to do
Say things that aren't really true
After we've had a bad day
Through it all this much I know
Our love continues to grow
And I've come to see all you give to me in so many ways
Like the shore and the sea
A door and its key
We were made to be together

Chorus

WAITING IN THE WINGS

Chorus:
Waiting in the wings
To make a start, to play your part
Waiting in the wings
Soon the time for you to shine will come

The lines are well rehearsed
And you have been well versed
In the moves you must make
The cues you must take
From the first curtain call
To the last curtain fall
As the lines from the page
Come alive once more on the stage

Chorus

And when you hit the floor
Will you leave them wanting more
As they hang on every word
And gasp at what they've heard?
Or will they look away
Wonder if they should stay
When the time comes around
Will you die or bring the house down?

Chorus

ALL I HEAR

I pick up the phone
'Cause she said she'd be home
But what can it mean?
All I hear is her answer machine

Chorus:
Where is my love?
I miss her so much
Where is my love?
Why can't I get in touch with her now?

Why can't I get through?
What am I going to do?
How long has it been?
All I hear is her answer machine

Chorus

I wish I could see her beautiful face
And not have to be in this far away place
Like a ship lost at sea I long to be
Once more anchored in her quay
But when there's no reply I wonder why
And if I'll be left high and dry

When I heard her say
I could call her today
Well I never dreamed
All I'd hear was her answer machine

Chorus

THE JOURNEY

When I started my journey
I was hoping that somehow
I would find a place for me
And feel as I do now

When I took a wrong turning
And lost my way
It was all part of learning
Just where my path lay

As I went on my journey
I would look for the reason
In all the things I would see
Through the turning of the seasons

And sharing my feelings
With friends on the way
Gave the journey deeper meaning
And a clue to where my hopes lay

Though some I met on my journey
Didn't seem to want me there
I was deemed an outsider
And left to look elsewhere

But then others I wish I
Still knew to this day
And the parting came too soon
When we went our separate ways

Many a river would have been much too wide
Without somebody to row me to the far side
Many a mountain I could never have climbed
Without somebody to throw me down a lifeline

If I had to leave all this
At least I'd be leaving
With what I've learned on my journey
And I've come to believe in

Whether your dream comes true
Or you miss your call
It's friendship and love
That mean most of all

BETWEEN TWO WORLDS CD

HOME FROM HOME

For many a year it didn't seem clear
The way to go
Then I found the key to set myself free
And opened the door

Chorus:
In the sun and the rain I will remain
Home from Home
From the first days of spring to the snow winter brings
Home till home again

Now I'm stepping out and all of that doubt
I've left behind
For the place I am bound is where I have found
My peace of mind

Chorus

Through forests and fields
Over rivers and streams
I will go
By hills upon high
Reaching up to the sky
From the valley below

And I'm glad for each day I'm able to stay
Here in this land
For I know I can say it's a part in some way
Of what I am

Chorus

THE GEESE FLY FARTHER THAN THE EAGLE

See the eagle in the trees
On the breeze
Almost always alone
Watch him moving when in flight
In his fight
Coming in for the kill
With eyes fixed upon his prey
Those claws and hooked beak will not betray
All the power his body does convey
As once again it's bound to go his way
But…

Chorus:
The geese fly farther than the eagle
The geese much farther do they fly
The geese fly farther than the eagle
Far, far across the sky

See the geese fly on by
Oh so high
To some far distant land
Watch their leader take his turn
For he's learned
He can carry the rest
For with each flap of his wings
As he flies through the air he'll bring
To those who follow from the back
That added strength they alone would lack

And…Chorus (twice)

LAMENT OF A MALCONTENT

Well you look in the mirror but still you can't see
Just who you are or what you should be
But don't let it bother you, everything's fine
You would if you could but you haven't the time
And tomorrow won't listen to yesterday's whine
'Cause the wets and the wimps end up last in the line
So put on a brave face and give them a smile
Show you mean business and say it with style

Chorus:
And all the while the rank and file
Are nailing their hearts to the mast
Wailing in the ocean so vast
Failing to learn from the past

You can dance in the dark and have a good time
Forget all about the violence and crime
So put up your shutters and turn a blind eye
To the ones at your door lying under the sky
But 'No man is an island', have you heard it before?
And no matter how you try you just can't ignore
That the waves will come crashing down on your shore
And the castles you've built will be washed away once more

Chorus

But don't try and look into their eyes
Or you might not win this week's coveted prize
Don't try and say that's where the danger lies
Or you might be told you'll be brought down to size
Don't try and ask if that's really so wise
Or you might find out just what your money buys
And don't try and hear what this culture denies
Or you might just heed these cavernous cries

Chorus

CIRCLE OF STONES

Far beyond my horizon
Stands a circle of stones
Through the ages they've stood there
As the winds of change have blow
From that time long forgotten
When the people bowed and prayed
To the moon's wax and waning
On which their hopes were laid

And for a fertile land and people
It was decreed there was a price
To imbue their fate with favour
There must be a sacrifice

In that valley of my homeland
Where the stone circle stands
I remember often walking
With my lover hand in hand
And those days we spent together
In the first flush of youth
We both dreamed they'd last forever
And for a while forgot the truth

Till the time came to be leaving
And to follow the advice
To imbue our fate with favour
There must e a sacrifice

POSTCARD FROM TUBINGEN

We boarded the coach at Chorlton Station
Bound for Germany, our destination
Then on the ferry to reach the continent
Watching the lights go dim on the shoreline of Kent
We reached Ostend as the day was dawning
To a bright and blue sky summer morning
Then on through Belgium 'til later that day
We made it into Ulm where we were soon to play

Chorus:
And I only wish that you
Could have been here too
Sharing the sights and sounds
Surrounding me in Germany

In Tubingen Square before the next show
We were to perform at the Café Rainbow
I bought a postcard so I could send you word
A snapshot, a travelogue of all I've seen and heard

Chorus

Down by the Danube I stopped a moment
To think of the days and nights that I've spent
Sharing my music with the people over here
Watching some boundaries start to disappear

Chorus

HEART ON THE LINE

When I'm feeling lost and alone
The music can somehow take me back home
It lets me come in from the cold
By reaching out and touching my soul

Chorus:
The bittersweet refrain
Of the pleasure and the pain
That follows every time
You lay your heart on the line

I recall the times when I've heard
The artist paint a picture in words
That say in some way through the song
Just what it was I'd felt all along

Chorus

So come all you weavers of dreams
And tell to me just what you have seen
For when to your heart you're true
You make me feel like I've been there too

Chorus

DISPARATE HEROS

There once were two armies, the legend does go
Who fought a great battle a long time ago
They fought and they fought throughout that long day
'Til down on the ground the dead bodies lay

Apart from two soldiers left still alive
One from each side had somehow survived
But with so muchfighting they could hardly stand
So they made an agreement and here's what they planned

They'd wait 'till the morning, sleep through the night
And when the sun rose they'd finish the fight
But sleep wouldn't come so in silence they lay
To wait for the dawning of the new day

'Til a voice in the dark said, "I wish I could be
Where my family and friends are waiting for me"
Then the other one said, "I feel just same
If only I could see them now once again"

And slowly they started to tell each in turn
Of the land where they lived and longed to return
And many a tale they told through the night
The time passed so quickly until the first light

And now face to face they stood and they knew
That what had been started both had seen through
Though many had died for power and glory
They could no longer fight for they knew each other's story

SAFETY IN NUMBERS

The techno-priests showed us what we should do
And blindly we followed their cue
And never thought about future plans
We just left it all in their hands
Till finally we've come to see
We're stuck on this runaway train
Moving faster all the time
But heading down the wrong lane

But with the flick of the switch once again
It's just like some computer game
With numbers flashing up on our screen
We begin the daily routine
To regulate and seal the fate
Of those beyond our conclave
As we protect the Internet
To which we've all become slaves

Safety in numbers
No need for alarm
Safety in numbers
Conform to the norm

In the world outside there's no place to hide
From the ones who've been left to one side
Whose only means of surviving it seems
Would be to tear down all our machines
So we must be once more you see
In virtual reality
Where rules apply that say that I
Must deny my humanity

Safety in numbers
The cyber land charm
Safety innumbers
Where is the harm?

BETWEEN TWO WORLDS

I've got one foot in folk and the other in pop
That's the way it's going to be until the day I drop
It don't matter to me if I'm not a safe bet
If I play it like I feel it I've got nothing to regret

All the while I've been walking this line
Between two worlds, between two worlds

Well Simon used to play in a Jazz-fusion band
With a touch of the music from that Far East land
And I used to play the famous Fab Four
On my guitar as a singer from the floor

All the while we're trying to bridge that borderline
Between two worlds, between two worlds

Then Simon played some Klesmer while I joined a band
Who said they needed a singer to lend a helping hand
'Til we finally got together and they said we'd go far
But that was quite some time ago and we're still "rising stars"

Where's the crime in trying to bridge that borderline?
Between two worlds, between two worlds

But there will be the nights we'll remember all our days
When the audience we played to were with us all the way
And afterwards some came up and thanked us with a smile
That somehow seemed to make what we were doing all worthwhile

THE BALLAD OF LADY JANE'S LOVER

Many is the time when I think of Lady Jane
And the love we shared though her hand I never could gain
For she was born into a wealthy family
But I would always be of the peasantry

On the day we met well it felt that in some way
We had always been both waiting for this day
Just to steal a moment to be on our own
We would live each day for time to share alone

She said loving me was like each Christmas morn'
And it felt so right just to hold her in my arms
Why should it be so wrong to do what we have done
As each from the 'other half' became as one?

I would say to her "If only I could give you more"
But she'd say to me "I've never been this happy before"
So we kept our secret from the world outside
They would never understand what it was we had to hide

The last time that we met, how was I to know
That this love of mine would be soon to go?
Had someone suspected? I'll never understand
Why she had sailed away to some far off land

How we fall in love, who is to explain?
But from where we fall is a measure of our pain
Will we, I wonder, ever look at life another way?
And where we've come from won't rule the day

CHASING THE SHADOWS CD

SAILIN' ON

Sailin' on across the ocean
To a place where I can be
Free from all this persecution
Just because I disagree

Chorus:
The sun comes up in the morning time
Down on us it don't always shine

If it's wrong of me to question
If it's wrong of me to know
Then I sure don't need persuading
That it's time for me to go

Chorus

But will it all turn out the same there,
Will we lose our liberty?
Or will there finally be somewhere
With a true democracy?

Chorus

THE WORLD KEEPS ON TURNING

Chorus:
And the world keeps on turning
To the rhythms of the skies
And my mind keeps on yearning
To find the reason why

What are we doing here,
Through all our hopes and fears,
Through all our laughter and tears?
One day we've got to go,
Though when we never know,
'Til then it's on with the show

Chorus

The source of everything
What set the wheels in spin
And how did it all begin?
The stars, the moon and sun
Will still be shining on
Long after we've gone

Chorus

ACROSS THE DIVIDE

Hear them call, watch them fall
And do nothing but walk on by
That's the creed that some feed
To the ones who swallow the lie
That to survive and stay alive
We can't afford to wonder why

Chorus:
Rich and poor, black and white
Girl and boy, young and old
Why do some have so much more
While the rest are not blest
With the best, fail the test
And are turned away from the door?

Everyone depends upon
Someone at some time to lend a hand
Give and take, share the cake
With everyone throughout the land
But some say, "Not today."
That's not the way they've got things planned

Chorus

REMEMBER

I wonder if you ever think of the time
That glorious summer when your love was mine
Walking barefoot through the stream in the sultry air
Swimming under the waterfall, remember there?

We danced to the music, our spirits in flight
With senses reeling, on into the night
Slipping off, just the two of us, when no one was aware
We lay down by the water's edge, remember there?

Chorus:
I can hear your voice still ringing in my ears
And your face I can see in my mind's eye
All the places and the times that we did share
Till we said our last goodbye

But back to the humdrum we had to descend
As all good things one day must come to an end
But although we were torn apart from a love so rare
Deep inside me I always will remember there

Chorus

YESTERDAY DREAMS

Take me back down
To all my yesterday dreams
To all those broken down schemes
Once again, once again

Take me back down
To all the places I've been
To all the things that I've seen
In my mind, in my mind

I don't know what to do anymore
I don't know what it's all for

Take me back down
To when it all seemed so clear
To when it all would appear
To be right, to be right

I don't know what to do anymore
I don't know what it's all for

But there was such magic in the air
You could see it, you could feel it everywhere
There was such magic in the air
You could feel it, you could see that it was there

Take me back down
To all my yesterday dreams
To all those unforgettable schemes
Once again, once again
Take me back down

VICTIMS OF CIRCUMSTANCE

Before you judge and criticise
Don't you think it would be wise
For you first to realise
To each and every story
There'll always be two sides

Chorus:
We're all at times
Victims of circumstance
Unable to call
The tune to which we must dance

Before you start to cast the blame
Why don't you just think again?
How can I now make it plain,
In that situation you'd have done the same

Chorus

IN A NEW LIGHT

At first I thought I saw
What I was looking for
But with each step I made
My hopes began to fade

Chorus:
The questions still remain
But I don't feel the same
For what seemed to be in sight
I've now seen in a new light

So I must count the cost
Of all this time I've lost
If I now start again
Has it all been in vain?

Chorus

But though I must start anew
I've gained a clearer view
For I can now see through
What once appeared as true

Chorus

NO MAN'S LAND

Chorus:
Here I am, in no man's land
No flag to wave
No nation to save
Here I am, in no man's land
No need to mourn the brave
Or dig an early grave

What are we fighting for,
When will the killing cease?
Why must there be a war,
Can't we all live in peace?

Chorus

How is a nation made?
Who is it carves up the land
And says we must obey
The one who's in command?

Chorus

I'VE GOT ALL I NEED

Hitched a lift down to the coast
Told my fellow traveler
How I had quit my post
Empty dreams I had been fed
So I left my station
And on the road I tread

Chorus:
Now I'm finding each day and night
In the life I lead
Even though I'm traveling light
I've got all I need
I've got all I need

Waking up down on the beach
Watching blue waves breaking
To me they almost reach
Seems to me as I look around
Words can hardly express
What it is I have found

Chorus

Though I know close to the shore
I may lie a while
I can't stay forever more
Then again, who is to say
Where they'll be tomorrow
Or what may come their way

Chorus

THE ARK IS SLOWLY SINKING

You see it on the TV
You know it's what you need
How ever did you do without?
You've come to believe
So now you've found the answer
You know what you must do
You've got to have it right away
To make your dreams come true

Chorus:
Buy, buy, buy!
Buy, buy, it's a good buy!

But today's another day
And you've found for some time
It doesn't do that much for you
It's somehow lost its shine
There's only one solution
You know what you can't refuse
You've got to have another one
To chase away your blues

Chorus

So now you've got the goods
And you are feeling fine
You've got back what you thought you'd lost
Somewhere down the line
But the ark is slowly sinking
Weighed down by you who play
This fatal game of following
The ones who always say…

Chorus

STICKS AND STONES

It happened again to him that day
When he had just gone out to play
They made sure no one was around
So no one saw or heard a sound
As once more they said, "Let's get him."
Each one wearing an evil grin
What was it he had ever done,
Why did they choose him for their fun?

Chorus:
Sticks and stones may break my bones
And words will often hurt me
Why don't you leave me alone,
How can you do what you do to me?

They'd start by calling him those names
Again and again and again
Then they'd surround him from all sides
So he'd no chance to run and hide
And then the beating would begin
As they all started hitting him
Each dishing out more than his share
Until they left him lying there

Chorus

I saw it in the news today
He couldn't face a life that way
Not knowing what they'd do next time
Or when they would commit the crime
He didn't know what he'd done wrong
But it had gone on far too long
There didn't seem any other way
But to end it all that day

Chorus

CHASING THE SHADOWS

I stand here with my drink in my hand
Outside this café in Amsterdam
I look and see the boats sail on
Chasing the shadows made by the sun

I watch as they come and go
Back to where they came from before

And as every evening falls
I'll walk to where you'll be and for you call
I know I will be with you soon
Chasing the shadows made by the moon

I'll stay 'til it's time to go
Back to where I came from before
